One of the concerns that has been raised repeatedly is whether pollutants in the Ballona Creek could harm the Wetlands themselves if the levees are breached, allowing polluted water to flow directly into the Wetlands. This concern was raised at least as early as 1986 when the National Audubon Society was designing its own smaller scale restoration.
The joint EIS/EIR currently being prepared by the State must very clearly explain how this pollution issue will be addressed. It is not enough to be confident that the problem can be solved. A detailed, well-vetted solution should be in place prior to any construction beginning.
